Situated in the English Channel just off the north-west coast of France, the Bailiwick of Guernsey is a unique cluster of islands that are linked to the United Kingdom by their status as a British Crown dependency.  Neolithic farmers first settled the island, but were followed by the Britons before the island chain was annexed in the medieval period by the Duchy of Normandy.  Guernsey was occupied many times by the French in the centuries that followed, and was occupied by German forces during World War II.  The main island within the group, Guernsey, is home to the capital St. Peter Port, a town which is famous for being the home of Victor Hugo whilst he was in exile.  Features worth visiting whilst in St Peter Port include Castle Cornet and St Peter Port Harbour, the major hub for ferry crossings from France and the United Kingdom.  The German Occupation Museum and many World War II fortifications are also worth a look.

Guernsey is serviced by a single airport, Guernsey Airport, located approximately seven kilometres to the south-west of St Peter Port.  Although small, the airport is used by close to a million passengers each year and is visited by Lufthansa, FlyBe, Blue Islands, Aurigny Air Services and VLM Airlines on regular schedules flights.  There are only two car-hire companies that operate from the terminal, Europcar and Avis (under the name Value Rent-a-Car), and they are located within the Airport Concourse.  Other car rental companies present on the island include Hertz, Sarnia/Baubigny Car Hire, Guernsey Car Hire and Falles.
